One of the most challenging pilot supplies that most pilots encounter are aviation headsets. The reason being is that most pilots do not get the expert advice needed prior to comparing say a David Clark Headset against a Telex or Echelon headset for example.

I remember when I was working eight hour flight training days as a flight instructor. I desperately needed the comfort and noise cancelling features found in a high quality active noise reduction headset like the lightspeed zulu. When I told my wife what I was going to invest in my new headset she thought I was nuts, until I came home and had half the fatigue I normally had with my worn and tired passive noise reduction headset! Basically, the ANR headset paid for itself many times over by increasing my productivity. As a matter of fact, I bought another headset for my wife, so when we went on long cross country trips, the ride was even more comfortable and fun than a commercial flight. After all, isn’t this one of the main reasons why we pursue piloting?

Another recommendation, I have for active pilots is to create a headset kit for yourself. Get yourself an intercom like the telex portable aviation intercom, push to talk switch, a spare headset and ear pads and keep these items in your headset bag. I learned from experience that flight school or friends aircraft are not properly wired for communications. Wow! We could not even talk to each other.
